'Tripping' from Michael in Australia

I remember when Iris and Ken first started dating; I think Ken only had a pushbike at the time?  He soon got himself and old car (an old banger...your words Ken?) and fixed it up, then progressed to a more modern car(s), two I think, one was American looking, probably Iris’s keen Elvis edge at work?  In those days car ownership for many people was rare, and they used to always take us; Ethel, Tom and myself on excursions or scenic drives most weekends.  The first time I ever saw a real soft sandy beach (after the constant day trips on a coach/charabanc to Brighton’s ’boulder beach’) was when Iris and Ken drove us all to West Wittering, for me, extremely exotic!  Another time we went to Bodiam Castle and a bird landed on Ethel’s head (I think it was a swallow) which made her laugh for ages before she and Iris had to make a run for it to spend a penny.  I can remember us driving through a heavy scary cloudburst complete with loud thunder in Windsor; Tom thought he heard The Queen scream? We visited Battle Abbey at Hastings, and made heaps of different trips all courtesy of Iris and Ken.  Once we even visited Tom’s brother Jim in Biggin Hill, the one and only time that I met a member of my grandparents’ family, from either side of the Young or Armiger clan.  Iris must have convinced Ken to take me out in his lorry when he was working.  I was always singing (loudly) in the cab, a favourite was “Good Timin’” and “Handyman” both by Jimmy Jones, quite the stretch.  No doubt about it Iris & Ken both understood, kindness and tolerance.
